I am a certified personal trainer ("CPT") who specializes in weight loss, muscle gain, and general wellness. But as a person, I also specialize in writing, music, vegetarianism, politics, and culture. I am a fiction author, fairly extensive blogger, and small business owner. I got into fitness somewhat later in life, enough to actually enter the fitness industry, having already cultivated numerous creative skills and an active political consciousness. In addition to the fact that my college degree is in English, I believe this makes me somewhat rare in the fitness community. While attending Montclair State University, I had some of the best experiences of my life as a student activist. During that time, I also hosted a radio show, played in rock bands, was a legislator in my student government, worked as a copyeditor, and personally trained my friends. I had a lot of outlets, and fitness was one of them. While I was in school, it was all hugely rewarding. But once I graduated, it took time to find direction. The pressure to decide what to do with my life was pronounced, and I almost buckled under it. It is hard enough to find direction in this world, and the fitness industry (and the other industries connected to it, like fashion and movies) with their quick-fix marketing schemes, unrealistic body images, and contradictory information, only make it harder for people to know if they are "doing it right." I have found that the feeling of "doing it right" begins with accepting yourself for who you are, and based on that acceptance, knowing why you are doing a certain thing. Only then can you cultivate a better version of yourself---an informed, confident, strong version---with a better grasp on who you are, where you are going in life, and most importantly, why. It was in this way that I learned the whys and directions of my life: using fitness to help people, to improve their own lives and their world.
