“I think this is what we all want to hear: that we are not alone in hitting the bottom, and that it is possible to come out of that place courageous, beautiful, and strong.” -Anna White
Hitting rock bottom can feel like dying; everything you were has failed and there's nothing left but to be reborn. Here are some tips to keep in mind as you begin your transformation into someone you're proud to be:
- Let your emotions out.
The only way to work back up is to feel and acknowledge every single emotion that's weighing you down - be it happiness, anger, guilt, anxiety, etc. - then leave them all behind.
You have to let go of everything that anchors you before you can start to rise again.
- Take your time.
There's no time limit on reinventing yourself. It may take weeks, months, or years for you to be completely happy with the way things are and that's perfectly normal.
Take responsibility for your life and your choices.
You are the ultimate deciding factor in your life. If you want to do something, do it, but don't blame anyone else if it doesn’t turn out the way you want. Own up to your own mistakes and accept the consequences.
- Try new things.
Since you're reinventing yourself, why not try something you've never done before? The only way to find out who you truly are is to test your boundaries and see what feels right.
Check out a new restaurant, go on a blind date, or test out a different gym; even if you don’t enjoy them, you can still take comfort in being brave enough to try.
- Surround yourself with those who make you happy.
Words of encouragement and appreciation will go a long way at this point in your life. You need to know that friends and family have your back.
Take this time to re-evaluate some of the people you've surrounded yourself with. If they don't bring anything meaningful to the table, do you really want them in your new life?
- Stop waiting and start doing.
This is your life, remember? You're fully in control. If you want to do something, do it; no one else can make the decision for you.
- Recognize what you have and what you want.
Stop taking things for granted. Let the people who always look out for you know how much you appreciate them; check in often and make sure they're a core part of your life.
Figure out what you want to achieve and set up goals to get there. Ask for help if you need it, everyone was a beginner at some point and there are always people willing to help.
- Be persistent.
You're going to have days when you feel like nothing is working and you haven’t progressed, push through anyway. One day you'll look back and realize how far you've really come.
Just remember you're never given more than you can handle. Sometimes you need to hit rock bottom to be reminded of how strong you truly are.
