8 Reasons to Suck at Stuff

So you suck at something. You probably suck at a LOT of things. Sometimes you suck at something you're supposed to be good at and wonder if you were ever actually any good at the thing, or if you've just sucked at it all along and no one had the heart to tell you.

It's okay. It will all be okay. Take a deep breath, and remember that it is okay to suck at stuff. In fact, I'd go so far as to argue it's GOOD to suck at stuff. It is overall beneficial to you as a person to be absolutely terrible at something. Even if it's something  you love. Even if it's something you think you're good at.

Why?

1. Sucking at something is the first step toward actually being good at it. You're not going to be good at something you've never done, and you're going to suck at something the first time you do it. So remind yourself, as you are crying over your painful failure and pathetic lack of skills at your desired craft, that you have to suck for a while to get good.

2. Think of it as a first draft. The first time you do something, you'll suck at it. The second time, you suck less. The third time, maybe you STILL suck, but you suck less still. By the 100th time, the thing is the best it can be–because you let yourself make something terrible and grew from that.

3. Sometimes it's okay to do something because it's fun, and not with the hope of eventually getting good. You suck at singing? Does singing make you happy? Sing. Sing because it makes you happy, and let sucking at it be a reminder that you don't have to be competitive or please others in order to make yourself happy.

4. It teaches humility. You don't want to get a big head. It's good for you to be terrible at something. If you're really good at something, you should probably be really bad at something else, just to keep it fair.

5. It also reminds you not to take for granted the stuff that you are totally awesome at. Which, you know, you probably sucked at at one point too.

6. Everybody sucks at stuff. We all have that one friend who's seemingly flawless, right? Maybe they can sing, paint, write, and even fix cars like a motherf***er, but literally can't roller skate more than two feet without falling down, have no sense of direction, and despite having played thousands of hours of video games, still have to play on easy or they die in seconds. Everyone. Sucks. At. Stuff.

7. Face it, sometimes it's hilarious. Sure, you can't actually ACCOMPLISH something with how much you suck at a given thing (usually), but you can get a good laugh out of it and that's probably more important anyway.

8. There's seriously a freedom in being awful at something. It's LIBERATING. When you stop expecting yourself to be good at everything, or to only do things you're good at, the door is open to all kinds of new activities, hobbies, even friendships.

So go forth and suck at something. It's part of being awesome.
